PAGE 3:IGN Exclusive Interview part 1. Object Software's free to play game involving five feudal domains from ancient China's famed Warring States era
April 28, 2008 - The Warring States period in ancient Chinese history began around 475 BC with the death of the king of the Zhou, the last ruler of the Shang Dynasty. As the name indicates, the next two and a half centuries were marked by almost continuous armed conflict as a number of feudal realms sought to expand their influence by defeating and annexing each other. However, there was more than just bloodshed. Interestingly, the turmoil allowed for social changes. In addition, philosophy flourished, with many new schools of thought arising. Of course, the more powerful nations gradually conquered their smaller neighbors. From about 338 to 288, a time of more rapid consolidation took place that saw the formation of rival Eastern and Western empires. From that point, the hostilities increased until the former emerged triumphant; in 221, the country was finally unified.

Object Software's Phoenix Dynasty Online takes place during the later part of this period, in a gameworld based on this historical context and also incorporating elements from myth and legend. The Zhou Emperor sits on the throne in Sun City, although he's a figurehead with no concrete power. His warlords not only ignore him, but also plot to take his place. When he disappears, nothing stands in their way except each other. The colorful massively multiplayer title, which launched in China in 2006, is currently available in North America on a free to play basis. With an expansion about to be added, it seemed like a good time to delve into the project by questioning Marketing Director Engputer Young and Product Manager Danny Qin of publisher Ingle Games together with one of the team leaders, Manager of Development Zhang Boqiao.

________________________________________

Jonric: To begin with the basic concept for Phoenix Dynasty Online, what is the game about, and what makes it different from other massively multiplayer titles, both current and upcoming?

Engputer Young: Phoenix Dynasty Online is a historical fantasy action MMORPG set in the Warring States period of ancient China (475 B.C to 221 B.C.), when warlords annexed smaller states around them, before four major ones rose to prominence. The phoenix is a symbolic figure representing the hero who arises in this militaristic time and starts a new dynasty. The game has hundreds of historical story-based quests, and is integrated with traditional Chinese philosophy, so you will definitely feel it's different from the other titles that are available.
In North America, our core target market would be fairly youthful, but we've already found a lot of older players who love Chinese history and culture and bring their whole families to play this game.

Jonric: Where is the developer, Object Software, located? How large is the company, and what other products has it released?

Zhang Boqiao: Established in 1995, Object Software (Beijing) Co., Ltd. is the first video game and multimedia software developer in mainland China. With its rapid growth, the company also became the first Chinese game developer to sell products in international markets.

The past several years have witnessed tremendous growth, from a game maker with only a small number of programmers to a very well known developer with nearly 300 employees and the rights to more than 10 Chinese intellectual properties. This means that based on game development backed by strong technical expertise and after-sales service, Object is now one of the leading Chinese studios mainly specializing in online games. In addition, the company also dabbles in the development of such products as PC games, TV games, and educational and commercial software. They are sold in the Chinese mainland and more than 100 international countries and regions including North America, Europe, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

Jonric: When did the development of Phoenix Dynasty Online begin? Where is it currently available, and why has it been successful?

Zhang Boqiao: We started to develop Phoenix Dynasty Online in 2004. We successfully launched it in China in 2006, and it has enjoyed wide popularity. Apart from the domestic market and North America, we also publish it in Southeast Asia. Our players have given us very positive feedback on the game, and have also brought up raised a lot of interesting ideas.

I think a major key to success is because we were the first group of people in China to make PC games; we have a lot of experiences during over the last 14 years, and we know the need of our users. In addition, we adapted many good ideas from console games to our MMORPGs.

Jonric: What business model are you using in North America, who do you see as your core target audience, and why does this game have a greater chance of success here than other Asian imports?

Engputer Young: We introduced our version of the free to play concept to North America in 2004 when we were working on other games. Based on this, we added a new adaptation that we call "play to earn". Players can get valuable in-game items by working hard. If you really love this game, you will find it's a totally free MMORPG.

In North America, our core target market would be fairly youthful, but we've already found a lot of older players who love Chinese history and culture and bring their whole families to play this game. The main opportunities or strengths are that the game is quite enjoyable, and our having an experienced team that has successfully launched a Chinese MMORPG in North American before. I think that's why it has better chance of doing well than some other Asian imports.

The main barrier would probably be the culture differences. Since the game was designed based on the Chinese philosophy, it's sometimes hard to understand parts of the context. We've tried our best to solve this problem by translating the potentially perplexing parts into simple English.

Jonric: What would you like our readers to know about the game's overall setting, its central conflict and the key factors that make them especially interesting?

Zhang Boqiao: Phoenix Dynasty Online is set in the Warring States period of ancient China. In the game, not only will you interact with many historical figures, also you will experience various aspects of the country's ancient myth. While following the main storyline, players will intensely feel and enjoy their in-game characters' growth; naturally, they start as vulnerable novices, and progress until they finally ascend to the status of invincible saviors who emancipate people from the chaos and misery prevalent during that dark time.

combat in Phoenix Dynasty Online is not as simple as clicking on the monsters. Players need to master the Five Element System, the game's most significant feature, which also interacts with their skills and equipment

In addition to PvP among players and guilds, the game strongly emphasizes PvE instances in which players can face the villainous and cunning thugs in ancient Chinese legends. Also, since Phoenix Dynasty Online integrates a background of ancient times and legendary tales, and incorporates nicely interlocking quest scenarios, it is sure to furnish an understanding and feeling of that unusually turbulent period of history.

Jonric: How would you describe the look of the game's art direction? What are the major factors that influenced it?

Zhang Boqiao: Phoenix Dynasty Online is set within the background of a specific period in China's past, so the feeling of that ancient time can be perceived everywhere... in the characters' appearance, their clothing and even the style of the in-game architecture are representations of what we know from history. The other visual elements such as fortresses, battlefields, cities are also as genuine as we could make them.

Example of the visual style

Jonric: What type of gameworld have you created for players to explore and experience? How diverse are the regions and their individual locations?

Danny Qin: Based on historical facts, the gameworld is divided into five states: Zhou, Qin, Chu, Zhao and Chi. It is constantly expanding, and I think it's larger than those in most 2D titles. As for the locations and features, each state has its own geographical elements and natural appeal. This means that you can appreciate the gorgeous snowy scenery in the Zhao realm, or the watery, vernal villages of the Chu region, and of course, many other beautiful places that wait for you to explore.

In addition, the game incorporates a unique architectural style within each state. In Zhou, for example, you may be surprised by its magnificence, while the rustic, serene Chu region will convey an utterly different sense of appeal for your appreciation.

Jonric: How much flexibility is there in character creation, and what key decisions have to be made during this process?

Danny Qin: Characters are created with class and gender already set. They can be endowed with many more aspects and abilities later in terms of major and minor elements, reputation and skills. The choice of a major element selection is very important since it determines what kind of attack speed, HP, MP, AP and defense bonuses you can get every time you upgrade, as well as what kinds of major skills you can learn. Reputation decides what equipment you can use. Skills affect how powerful your character is in battle.

Jonric: What type of advancement system have you implemented in Phoenix Dynasty Online? What are the main elements, and how do they function and inter-relate?

Danny Qin: Character advancement system is not only based on levels, but also a combination of class, skills, element attributes, reputation, life skills, etc.

A given character has basic skills that are class-based. Later advancement will happen when it acquires experience, learns or upgrades a skill, and gains proficiency in crafting. As players level up, they can learn different types of fighting skills including major, minor and general ones plus sub-skills for item crafting, such as smithing weapons and armor, and working with leather and jewels.

For major and minor skills, characters can learn them in accordance with their elemental attributes when they have the appropriate skill book and enough magic arts, both of which can be obtained by killing certain mobs. For general skills, they can study them when they meet the financial and level requirements given by certain NPCs. For sub-skills, you need to learn the corresponding general skills first, and must also possess the appropriate sub-skill books and have reached a certain level.

As for crafting, players can only choose one live skill, and can then upgrade it by gaining proficiency, which can only be obtained by making items for themselves or by setting up booths to do so for other characters.

Players can max out the skills their characters currently have, but we will add more later. They will never decay even if you don't use them very much. Of all the abilities that players choose, only the item crafting ones and their sub-skills can be forgotten and re-learned.

Jonric: Within the scope of the overall play, how much does combat represent? What are the most notable objectives and features associated with it?

Danny Qin: The game will be quite combat-oriented for those players who intend to advance their characters rapidly. The players' overall goals in this element are to gain experience by killing powerful bosses and completing quests, and to obtain items such as gold, skill books, materials and even mounts.

Mount

However, combat in Phoenix Dynasty Online is not as simple as clicking on the monsters. Players need to master the Five Element System, the game's most significant feature, which also interacts with their skills and equipment, the PvP system and much more.

Combat scene

Jonric: Considering its importance, are you willing to explain how the five elements inter-relate and how the overall system functions?

Danny Qin: As I just mentioned, the five element system is our game's most important and interesting feature. It stipulates five types of attack and defense attributes. The Fire attribute increases attack speed, Metal enhances attack power, Earth improves defense, Water inflicts movement impairing effects, and Wood deals poisonous damage. There is no best element to pick since they restrict each other in an inter-connected series of relationships; metal restricts wood, which affects earth, then in turn, water, fire, then back to metal.

The guards in the towns where guild wars take place... are quite powerful. Their AI is set to a level that means they can summon their fellows to join the, and that they can cast spells.

Under this interaction scheme, players who have chosen metal as their major element are granted a favorable position if they kill those who selected wood, while they are disadvantaged if they defeat the ones who opted for fire. This kind of restriction, which is an integral part of the five element system, is unique to Phoenix Dynasty Online, and brings more fun to the game.

The Five Element System

Jonric: What forms of PvP are available in Phoenix Dynasty Online, and what are the key related features? Is it mandatory or non-consensual at any time?

Danny Qin: Phoenix Dynasty Online is a free PK game. You can set your character to PvP mode whenever you want except that in the main cities and the newbie villages, you can only go into duel mode. This means you can practice with others, although you do not gain any PK points.

In other places however, if you decide to turn PvP on, you will be in full PK mode. If you win, your points will increase, and once you reach a certain degree of success, your name will turn to red and you'll even be sent to the prison. If you die, you will lose items from your inventory as a penalty. What makes this part of our game different is the fact that the five element system plays such a key role. When you PK, you need to be aware of the associated restrictions and enhancement rules in formulating your strategy.

We believe PvP is an important but not indispensable element. Accordingly, it is not necessary for players to engage in PK with others. So, those users who prefer PvE always have access to such activities as solo quests and group raids.

Jonric: Since you brought up PvE, are there many different types of computer-controlled enemies? How would you describe their AI?

Zhang Boqiao: There are a lot of computer-controlled opponents such as monsters, and the guards in the towns where guild wars take place. To take the latter as an example, we designed them to increase the difficulty in these battles. When you set out to conquer a rival guild, you need not only to eliminate its members, but also to remove all of the NPCs that protect it.

That's a tough job since they are quite powerful. Their AI is set to a level that means they can summon their fellows to join the battle, and that they can cast spells. It's really fun when you see one of them use a fire blast to knock you out, and you fall down on the ground, or get trapped and can't move.

While we haven't been knocked out or trapped, we can't move on to the rest of our questions at the moment. That said, we have every intention of continuing our edifying look at Object Software's historically-themed title before long. In the meantime, our thanks Engputer Young and Danny Qin representing publisher Ingle Games plus Zhang Boqiao from the development team for providing the information about Phoenix Dynasty Online in this initial segment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jonric: Does Phoenix Dynasty Online impose penalties when your character dies, and do they differ if it happens in PvP?

Danny Qin: When your character dies, the penalty is that you will lose some money, experience and gold. These are the same whether you are killed by the monsters or other players. However, if your name has become red and you get PKed, you will lose your equipment, so don't be too naughty in the game. We set it like this because want players to challenge the equivalent monsters, and not to abuse PK.

You can make your items using different levels of materials. You can also use the five element theory when crafting so that you get pieces with the attributes you want.

Jonric: Can we expect to see and interact with many non-enemy NPCs? What kinds of roles do they play, and how important are they?

Danny Qin: Yes you can. There are over a couple of hundred types of NPCs. Many provide various services for the players, such as pharmacy, blacksmith and warehousing, and also fulfill many quest-related functions. There are also some special ones, such as the Mysterious Merchant who sells very unique items.

In addition to these neutral NPCs, there are also some very interesting ones that take sides. For example, there are those that help to guard a city in a guild war, or act as spies for certain states.

Preparing for battle

Jonric: Does the game have any kind of system for mounts and other types of pets? What varieties are available?

Danny Qin: There are two kinds of pets; one is mounts, and the other is creatures summoned to fight in battles. The former are available for all classes. They're designed according to the Four Symbols in traditional Chinese legend: the Azure Dragon, Vermillion Bird, White Tiger and Black Tortoise. Horses are the most common type, and players can get one as soon as level 5. Mounts have unique fighting skills and special attributes as well as movement speed bonus. Most can be obtained through normal play.

Priests have the ability to possess other pets. Summoning them is a skill unique to this class. It's acquired by completing a special quest, and upgraded by obtaining certain skills book and enough magic arts. Each element (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) is associated with two specific types of pets. For instance, a metal priest can summon the Tiger and Golden Ape. It's possible to use two pets at once; a character's capacity increases automatically as it advances.

Jonric: What major activities are there aside from combat? Is crafting important, and how feasible is it to specialize in it?

Danny Qin: The major activity aside from combat is item crafting. There are four types players can choose - blacksmithing, armor crafting, jewel crafting and leatherworking. When you don't feel like fighting, you can set up a booth in the main city and level up your skills by making things for other players.

If you don't like grinding and leveling, you can train your character to be a crafting master. You will be highly respected in the game since other players cannot purchase comparable items from the vendors.

Crafting interface

Jonric: Do players have access to a broad assortment of weapons, armor and other items? Is it possible to upgrade them? What are some cool examples?

Danny Qin: Phoenix Dynasty online has a large variety of equipment. The better the gear you have, the more powerful your character is. You cannot upgrade individual pieces, but you can make your items using different levels of materials. You can also use the five element theory when crafting so that you get pieces with the attributes you want.

I think currently coolest items are the wedding clothes. They are really amazing stuff, and a lot of players are eager to get them.

Jonric: Since Phoenix Dynasty Online uses the optional purchase business model, how do the items for sale differ from those available through play?

Engputer Young: We know the importance of a balanced economy. So, the items we pick for sale cannot influence it too much. Equipment from the cash shop and the gear available through play determine a player's power, which means you need them both. Besides that, we also sell some surprising things, for example, a panda mask.

Mount Tai as sunset

Jonric: How does your magic system function? What are the major differences in this aspect of your game design?

Danny Qin: Each class can use various kinds of magical skills. They range from common ones to sub-skills, from major to minor. They can be acquired from skill books and quests. Once a particular one is learned, you just need to use mana to cast it. You can level them up by collecting more books to learn from.

The game will always keep you busy and always bring you challenges. You can start guild wars, do team and guild quests, craft items, refine materials and so on. Our GMs frequently hold activities for those in different time zones.

The biggest difference from the other games is the element aspect. You need to gain magic arts to level up your associated skills. Each element has its own unique ones, so players have a lot of variations available.

Jonric: What's notable about the quests in Phoenix Dynasty Online? Are there various types? Do you offer any as part of GM-driven events?

Danny Qin: Quests are all designed based on actual history and legends. There are various types related to states, skills, guilds, teams, collections, errands and so on. They offer different rewards ranging from experience, gold, equipment and materials to special titles. Most repeatable assignments are at least partly randomized so players will not feel like they are repeating them. We will continuously add more optional tasks for high-level characters to keep the system fresh.

We have already held several kinds of successful GM events successfully, such as stakes on GMs, Hide and Seek, First Wedding Ceremony, crafting contests in the game, and writing contests in our forum. We will continue to do these, and will add more to entertain our players.

Snow town

Jonric: How important is short-term grouping? What is the maximum number of characters that can be in a party?

Danny Qin: Teaming up is always quite advantageous in the game, and can bring extra experience to the players so the whole group will level faster. The maximum number is 10; this is based on the leader's reputation. We strongly suggest that players group up to undertake the quests since the most require teamwork.

Grouping

Jonric: What level of technology do you employ for your client, and also for your servers? What is your capacity per cluster?

Zhang Boqiao: The game uses a 2.5D graphics engine that most hardware configuration can run smoothly. Since a computer with quite low specifications is sufficient, a lot of players call it a laptop MMORPG. 2.5D means players don't have the functionality to of shift the visual angle; however, we use a 45 degrees view that's comfortable for them.

We have very mature server technology from many years of programming it. One server can hold 800 to 1,000 concurrent users while maintaining smooth communication of data for them all.

Jonric: What would you like readers who aren't members of your community to know about your goals and efforts in this area?

Engputer Young: We are trying to build a friendly, dynamic, supportive community. The players' initiative and active participation are greatly appreciated; therefore we have a where they can help each other with quests, share experience, trade in-game items and talk about their hobbies, and where we can listen to their ideas, hold some forum activities, and have new bugs reported.

We also building an MSN community group. It works like a chat room, and helps to makes our overall communication more effective. Also, there are some guilds that have their own websites and use voice chat tools for guild wars and team quests. In this respect, we are not alone in building the community; the players will also help.

Duel

Jonric: What are the key directions in which we can expect Phoenix Dynasty Online to evolve over the coming months and the longer term?

Engputer Young: To integrate lots more fun stuff into Phoenix Dynasty Online is the key direction. We just released our first expansion pack. It lets players get married, and adds advanced quests plus a refining system. In the next one, we will raise the level cap from 100 to 120, bring instances into the game, and release a new life skill, master and apprentice system.

In the third one, we will implement gameplay more related to items, such as legendary artifacts, creation formulas and a decomposition scheme. The good news is that since updated versions of Phoenix Dynasty Online have already come out in Chinea, we won't need to wait too long for them.

Jonric: Why do you seem to feel this title will be especially appealing to the serious online gamers here in the west?

Engputer Young: Phoenix Dynasty Online is well designed, as we mentioned. This game is a really good choice for hardcore gamers who like to challenge themselves, especially for those who love to solo. I bet they will need to team up with others. They also love to learn new things, so the five element system will give them a whole new concept they'll need to study, remember and use in training their characters.

The game will always keep you busy and always bring you challenges. You can start guild wars, do team and guild quests, craft items, refine materials and so on. Our GMs frequently hold activities for those in different time zones. So, you will never have to play alone. As for soloing, if you can do it, you are really hardcore!

Five element fairy realm

Jonric: Are there other features or elements you'd like to mention, or any concluding comments you'd care to express?

Engputer Young: I think players need to download this game and explore it by themselves to see more of its features. We invite everyone to come and try it out, and we welcome all kinds of suggestions. Our community is a mature one, and all the players love to help the newcomers out. I bet you will get to know many friends here, even some lifelong ones. So come and enjoy Phoenix Dynasty Online today.

Since Phoenix Dynasty Online is available in North American as a free to play release, anyone interested in exploring its features can do so pretty easily. As for what's available to see and do within the historically- and mythologically- themed gameworld, we'd like to express our appreciation to Engputer Young and Danny Qin form regional publisher Ingle Games and to Zhang Boqiao from developer Object Software for telling us in this informative interview.
